Aurora, CO -- The police reported that a local man was killed on Tuesday morning of this week (March 17, 2015) after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver. Jason Soodsma, 41, was killed around 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning after his car was hit by 22-year old Jeremy Brown's vehicle.
This happened at the intersection of Quebec Street and East Iliff Avenue. Soodsma had been driving his car east along Iliff that morning while Jeremy Brown was driving east.
At some point, Brown lost control of his car and drove across the median, into oncoming traffic. He crashed into Soodsma's car, causing a major wreck that killed him immediately.
Jeremy Brown actually fled the scene on foot after the accident, but was quickly apprehended and arrested. He allegedly has a criminal history in Colorado, according to the news. Police suspected that Brown was under the influence of alcohol at the time and charged him accordingly.
There were four other people inside Brown's car at the time of the wreck and all were taken to a hospital, though none were seriously injured.

Commentary:
The police here will likely file charges against the driver who caused this accident and, since he has a history of violations and arrests, it may be a more serious punishment. However, there's something else that the law might do that the news didn't mention. If this driver had come from a bar that night and had been drinking there, then it's very likely that he had been served too much alcohol (hence, the alleged intoxication). In Colorado - and many other states - it's unlawful for bars or any other licensed provider of liquor to serve/sell drinks to minors and those who are obviously under the influence already.
If this driver had become intoxicated at a nearby bar and the police find out that they served him too much, then that bar might face penalties, fines, and other charges as well. They might even lose their license to sell alcohol, since the law requires you to do so responsibly. Furthermore, the law also allows for civil action against both drunk drivers who cause accidents and against bars that irresponsibly serve alcohol. The idea is that both parties contribute to alcohol-related accidents, so both are held liable. In plain terms, 'civil action' means lawsuits being filed to recover personal loss from an accident.
